Tano Bags or The Beatles - You decide!

Right around the same time "I Want to Hold Your Hand" hit the radio, I purchased my first TANO Handbag. Believe it or not, if you had asked me then if I thought Tano was better than the Beatles' music, I would've chosen Tano.

Yes, it's true. My favorite handbag designer in 1964 was TANO. I was 14 and already addicted to style and fashion. In those days, we sewed much of our clothing, traded, borrowed from each other, and saved our money to buy Gloria Vanderbuilt designer jeans! Buying a new purse was the most important task of all because back then, you had only one purse.

I remember my first Tano bag purchase as though it was yesterday. My school friend and I saved our money for a Tano barrel bag. It was cool! All the girls were carrying them. At least the cool ones -- so we thought.

Our little Midwest hometown wasn't much when it came to fashion as it's stated nowadays. Nonetheless, we had a few really cool clothing stores downtown and a handbag store -- Hollebs, Garbs and Elliots! The handbag store, Garbs, sold all the best bags available -- Coach was probably one of the highest styles at that time. And, there was Tano.

We loved the Tano styles because they were cool, affordable and made well. Nice to know not much has changed when it comes to Tano quality. We saved our babysitting money and bought our Tano bags, and it made us feel cool.

I wish I had a picture of my first Tano bag! The bag was a barrle shape, had double straps to carry over the arm. The body of the bag was partially covered with a heavy woven burlap style twill cloth, and it had complimentary black leather trim. The front of the purse closed with a flap front and a turnlock closure.

I'm telling you, this Tano barrel bag became one of the icons of the mid-60's. Gee, I wish I could remember the price, and I wish I still had that bag, or just a photo of it now. But, the memories still live on. The images I remember of those days include a teased, bubble hair style, white sneakers with nylon panty hose stockings and a very cool, black Tano handbag.

I have Tano to thank for creating fond fashion memories.

Victoria's square deal for a £2,500 handbag

from belfast telegraph
So, the long wait is over at last and to great hype, as well as assorted oohs and aahs from members of Belfast's new glitterati (yeuch), Victoria Square has finally opened for business.

We now have the following 'shops' at our disposal:

- A large English based department store whose main boast seems to be the fact that they have the largest selection of 'designer' handbags costing hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of pounds.

- Another three mobile phone shops to go with the existing 11 that we already have in the Royal Avenue/Donegall Place area alone.

- Yet another baseball cap/trainer shop.

- Numerous designer clothes shops selling £50 T-shirts to young people too stupid and peer-pressured to know any better.

- A teddy bear shop - just in case the people of Belfast haven't got enough dust gatherers in their homes already.

Apparently, one of the handbags on sale costs £2,500. What kind of vain and stupid person would pay £2,500 for a handbag? More importantly, perhaps someone could explain to me why Belfast is somehow better off by the fact that we have a centre selling such items. All this has left me with a strange sense of nostalgia for 1970s Belfast. Ok, things may have been a bit grim and we didn't have very many shops, but at least those we did have sold things that the average person wanted to buy and was able to afford. So, come back Woolworths, LeisureWorld (now that was a toyshop), Anderson & McAuleys, C&A etc - all is forgiven!

TANO handbags - going back in time

In 2006, the Tano bag website had a section called "Core." Here's an excerpt from the Core of the Tano Handbag company taken directly from the Tano website in 2006.

Tano's Modernist Roots

When Sebastian "Tano" Giner was just learning to crawl in the rural mountain village of Murla, Spain the Modernist era was exploding with creativity and excitement in world's big cites. The Modernists were turing the arts inside out...architecture, dance, literature, music, painting, and fashion. "Make it new," said Ezra Pound the great Modernist poet, and the artistic visionaries of the era followed his call.

The origins. Local basket makers gather outside the chalet of Sebastian "Tano" Giner. 1912.

One inspired visionary was Sebastian Giner, a scholar who paid his way through school as an artisan basket maker. By day he and a group of local villagers turned out handmade baskets made from cuttings of dried native grape vines. By night he studied the works of the modernists and economic theory of the industrial revolution. The region's farmers used his baskes to gather fruits and vegetables. The designs were well balanced, sturdy, proportional, a perfect meeting of form and function. They had to be. Sebastian was a demanding perfectionist. So much so that he earned himself the nickname "Tano" or perfectionist in the local catalan dialect.

True to the modernist spirit, when the first electric sewing machines arrived in Spain Tano was the first harness the technology and apply it to his craft. He expanded his product range to burlap sacks. The well proportioned bags were later adorned with leather handles and became a local fashion favorite. In time, Tano bags along with espadrilles from the neighboring city of Elche, would become the standard dress code in the region and later throughout Spain and Europe.

Tano's vision became one of innovation and discovery in handbags through shape, material, and color. Each new season brought renewed creativity and an expanding audience that couldn't get enough. In 1960, he turned the operations over to his two sons, Sebastian and Peter to fulfill his bold new vision. Together they opened the first modern handbag production line in Europe, Tano Iberica of Madrid. The brothers invested in new technologies at each opportunity so that they could quickly turn their artistic ideas into bags their audience could enjoy. The factory won the praises of the Spanish Export Council and earned recognition as Spain's largest and highest quality exporter of sewn goods during the 1960's and 1970's. The factory became the model which handbag factories around the globe would follow.

In 2002, the company entered it's third generation of family management. Grandson's Steve and Seb, took over the reigns, bringing with them a colorful past of handbag innovation and leadership. Says Steve of the company's future "We hold our company's past in the highest esteem. But ironically we must have a certain irreverence for all things past. This is how we keep our bags fresh. This was an integral piece of our grandfather's vision. We need to keep making it new."
